Marketing Case Study - "So Sarah, What Do You Do?"

Recently I was at a business networking event and as I usually do, I was going about my business and working my plan of what I wanted to accomplish while there. For me, my goal was to connect with at least 10 prospects for my coaching program. And then it happened... again.

We make eye contact and I walk over to introduce myself. Hi I'm Dean Mercado a marketing coach with Online Marketing Muscle... blah, blah, blah.

She goes ahead and tells me her name... and for our purposes here I'll just call her Sarah. A bit a small talk ensues. And then we get to the often asked and much dreaded question, "So Sarah, what do you do?"

Sarah's face begins to turn red as I can see the nervousness start to come on. Then she broke out into this whole what seemed like a dissertation that spoke of everything except answer my question... Sarah, what do you do?

As she trudged on and on about what she does... the hole she was digging kept getting deeper and deeper... it was clear that she wasn't sure what she did or wanted to do as her business. And in her unsureness, she made it very difficult for me to understand what she did. So instead of cutting and running, which is probably what most people would have done, I decided to play along and began asking some probing and clarifying questions.

As her long-winded answers finally started to take form, not only was Sarah involved in businesses in two totally unrelated fields, but she couldn't clearly communicate to me what she did in either of them, or why I should care.

So being a marketing coach, like a reflex, my "coaching hat" turned on and I gently asked if she was open to some coaching... she eagerly said yes... and we spent the next several minutes helping her get clear on what she did as a business and why someone should care.

The good news is that feedback from Sarah at the end of the networking event was very positive as she felt she made some solid connections that could pan out for her -- she was genuinely grateful.

The bad news here though, is as an avid networker, regardless of the networking event, I run into people like Sarah all the time. I recognize it so clearly because I used to be just like her -- completely confused about what I did or who I did it for. All the while trying to get several business opportunities off the ground at the same time -- none of which I might add did very well. It wasn't until I chose one to run with and got real clear on what I did and who I did it for that it began to take off.

So in closing, the moral of this story is if you're not crystal clear on what you do and who you do it for, there is no way I'm going to be -- and a confused mind certainly doesn't buy.

Shelby Foote, author of the historical three-part series The Civil War: A Narrative, once said that any understanding of the United States must first be firmly grounded in a true understanding of the American Civil War.

Much the same thing might be said about the understanding of American politics - and the historical works anyone must read - and re-read - to truly understand the culture of American politics - are the works of political journalist Theodore White.

White is best known for his writings and analysis of American culture and presidential politics - and how the two came together to elect the President of the United States in the years 1960, 1964, 1968, and 1972.

The books are titled The Making of a President (1960), The Making of a President (1964), The Making of a President (1968), and The Making of a President (1972). All were literary and financial successes with the 1960 bestseller winning the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction.

The Making of a President (1960) is a particularly stunning and colorful historical writing that remains to this day the work of record on the presidential election of President John F. Kennedy. White's work was literary genius, and it shaped political thought in this country for many years.

It is against this backdrop that the public is now getting a glimpse into the 2008 presidential campaign - not through the kinds of literary work put forth by Theodore White - but in tabloid-style autobiographies and book-hawking appearances on daytime television.

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has embarked on a national publicity tour to promote her new book: Going Rogue: An American Life. It is a runaway bestseller as people are naturally curious to know what she has to say about the 2008 presidential election.

Amid all the fascination with Governor Palin - her entry into the national political scene has not been an overriding success. She does have a rabid following among conservatives - but her actions since the 2008 campaign (including her resignation as Governor) have many wondering if she has a political future. Some suggest she may not want one.

Her reasoning for quitting as Governor was flimsy and what lingers is the thought that she made the decision to quit her position in order to take the millions offered for the book deal. Some may argue getting that much money is a good reason to resign - and it makes the most sense as well.

Her initial foray into the book tour (appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show) reminded us that she is after all a "hockey mom." She spent a great deal of time talking about what most "soccer moms" talk about - their kids.

The former Governor had a lot to say about her teenage daughter's former lover - Levi Johnston - and his decision to model for a pictorial in PlayGirl magazine. She thinks he's making the wrong decision to cash in on the notoriety of being the estranged father of her 10 month old grandson.

She complained that McCain aides mishandled her candidacy as the vice presidential nominee - although those charges have already been denied by the aides. The book also chastises McCain aides for advising her on what she should eat and how she should dress and for making her pay the $50,000 vetting bill run up during her vice presidential selection process.

Ms. Palin also complained about the content of a press release written by the campaign that announced her teenage daughter's unexpected pregnancy shortly after she was picked as McCain's running mate. (Perhaps no one in the campaign had prior experience writing a teenage pregnancy press release).

Still Going Rogue: An American Life will be a big commercial success and it is a certainty that this book will be on more family bookshelves than any volume of Theodore White's The Making of a President series. In years past no cultural detail was too small for White to analyze as to its significance in the outcome of a presidential election.

Those literal days are long gone, and sadly, the Palin book, along with its media tour, provides us with a contemporary version of White's work - and a look at politics as it is today.

Ethics Regimes and Integrity Systems

The first requirement is to remember the critical role of the legislature in the integrity system. People put too much faith in the capacity of a democratic legislature to prevent wrong-doing, we should never make the opposite mistake of rubbishing the integrity potential of democratic legislatures and put all our faith in independent or civil society 'watchdog' bodies. The essential insight of 'ethics regimes' and 'integrity systems' is that no single institution can provide the answer and that each must support the other. People argue that a democratic legislature can and should provide the lynchpin of the integrity system.

First, government officials only have power to act according to the law and Parliament can and should carefully consider what powers they give to public officials.

Secondly, members and committees asking questions of government can provide a focal point for the reporting of questionable practices. This strengthen independent bodies by giving them someone to report to, follow up reports, and provide public protection to those who are making valid criticisms of governments.

However, if committees of the legislature are to perform their functions they cannot be government controlled. The most likely way to ensure this is to select them from a house that is elected on a different basis to the government. In presidential systems this will frequently be the case, in bicameral systems it is often the case. Reformers should seek to ensure that the electoral system permits the chamber or chambers providing the committees to be elected on a different basis. This allows them to operate as a house of review rather than a rubber stamp (where controlled by the government) or a house of obstruction (where controlled by the opposition). Where there is no such house which can operate in this way, the possibility of appointing independent chairs, agreed to by both government and opposition, would provide an interesting and viable alternative.

If the legislature is to perform this critical oversight function, legislators have to see themselves as public officials performing a critical public service rather than mere ciphers for the party machines. It is not suggested an elimination of the party system and a 'return' to legislators acting on their individual consciences. This should involve the justification of the party system for what it can offer the public and a justification of the office of legislator that reflects the vital role they play in the democratic governance of the nation.

Political parties should see themselves as putting alternative views of the way that public power can be exercised for the benefit of the citizens. Most politicians enter politics with a belief that different public policies can make a difference and that they and their party set of policies will, on balance, improve the life of citizens. The problem is that, in the search for power, this is often forgotten and policies are put forward on the basis that they will get the politician re-elected rather than that they will benefit citizens. Where special interests provide election funding, the policies may be very much to the detriment of the citizens. Furthermore, there is a tendency to use questionable tactics - including the use of government advertising and the manipulation of information reaching the public - to secure re-election.

Majority it is the better choice. However, there is always a temptation to use governmental power to secure re-election by avoiding or distorting that choice. The crudest form of avoiding that choice involves a cancellation or postponement of elections. However, there are many other means of avoiding that choice -distorting electorates and electoral boundaries, manipulating electoral practices and electoral machinery, and using governmental power to silence opposition or promote government policies. The temptation is so great that it might seem that only strong laws will suffice. Certainly, there is a need for clear constitutional provisions, electoral laws with teeth, and independent electoral commissions with clear procedures for calling elections and counting the votes. There is a need for clear legal rules on electoral advertising, election funding, and government advertising. However, wherever there is power, there is a temptation for abuse. It is important that the fundamental democratic principles underlying those laws be clearly and publicly articulated and attempts made to live by them. Politicians in a democracy are members of a very important public profession. Politicians seek to articulate policy choices and put them before the people. If they believe that their policies and the general philosophy underlying them are correct, they should be proud to promote those policies and should believe that those public values and public policies deserve to be chosen on their merits by their fellow citizens. To seek to win by other means discredits those values and policies and dishonors their profession. Most politicians would hold to some such set of beliefs and would only justify deviations as defenses (or preemptive strikes) against even worse deviations by their political adversaries.

Sarah Palin As VP?

Everyone has been asking since it was revealed that Sarah Palin was McCain's choice for VP what I think. Here's my thoughts on it.

I know I am violating President Reagans rule of never speaking ill of a fellow Republican and especially during the convention I should be careful not to take the momentum gained by the GOP but I am tired of seeing my country undergo a systematic destruction of values and way of life that has made America great. And that's how I feel, its my country, as you should take what's happening here in your homeland as personal also. My opinion is this, Senator McCain as well as the GOP is having a hard time finding itself. First Senator McCain snubs the Values Voters debate held in September '07. Then more recently he tried to distance himself from Pastor John Hagee and Pastor Rod Parsley. Are those Conservative principles? Don't think for a second I'm giving Barrack Hussein Obama a free pass, he didn't attend the Value Voters debate either. But he did attend a conference more in line with the Democratic platform. That forum was for the Gays - Lesbian - Bi's and Transgenders. All of you remember this right? Obama catered to his base but McCain forgot what makes the GOP the GOP, the true Conservative. Likewise the Republican party seems to be disjointed. This is a party that is applauding the choice of Sarah Palin as VP, has on stage former candidates Governor Huckabee and Represantative Ron Paul alongside of Governor Romney who supported the homosexual agenda and cross dressing Mayor Giuliani. It doesn't add up, does it?

So, either Senator McCain chose Governor Palin strictly as a political maneuver to trump Obama, he realized that he can't win without a Conservative base or he is what I have been saying he should run as, a moderate that can bring both sides together. How else can you explain having former Democratic presidential hopeful Al Gore's running mate Senator Joe Lieberman stumping for you and then choosing a vice president as conservative as Sarah Palin? That shows signs of being able to reach across the aisle for unity.

In the end it really all comes down to Governor Sarah Palin. She has the weight of not only possibly being the first woman vice president but also carries the hopes of the conservative cause. Palin has a chance to set the standard for future women candidates and put the Republican agenda back on course. If she fails, it will be a set back for the Conservative Right but even a bigger set back for women.

Knowing nothing about Governor Palin until just recently I don't have much to go on other than judging her from her speech last night at the Republican Convention. I found her to be forceful when needed, humorous in other spots, her delivery was of a person with confidence, her voice was calm and reassuring unlike Hillary's that can make you wince, in all she hit a home run, no make that a grand slam and in doing so she made Senator McCain look brilliant.

Mom would get so mad and reprimand me as a child when I would talk back to her. She would say.... you have all the answers. My reply.. of course I do otherwise you wouldn't ask. This has carried on in my adult life as I have an opinion about everything. At times I tend to miss the mark in trying to relay my thoughts verbally but in writing, which is a passion, I seldom miss the mark of what I am trying to convey.

How the World Wide Web Will Influence the 2008 Election

Though not the first time the internet has been present for an election, the 2008 candidates for President are making more use of the World Wide Web than ever before, hoping to lure new voters from an increasing demographic that has been heretofore relatively unexploited. In addition to the candidates themselves, the internet has become a hotbed of political activity in the last decade, with websites devoted to politics on both sides of the spectrum drawing millions of visitors each month.

This election marks the first time Presidential primary debates have been held exclusively through YouTube, the internet site devoted to videos and owned by search engine giant Google. Millions viewed the debates online, and then took advantage of an instant talkback forum allowing for the public to express their views on how the candidates did, and who they were inclined to support.

Beyond the candidates themselves, the internet has opened up a new avenue for voters to become familiar with the issues dominating the election process. Search engines allow voters to seek out what candidates support what issues, something that could be difficult to do in the days before the internet. Surely this instant access to information will help produce more informed voters, and force candidates to rely on their voting records and speeches of the past to define their positions on the issues important to the electorate.

Many pundits have concluded that Sarah Palin's selection as the vice presidential candidate for the Republican party was highly influenced by the internet buzz Palin had.

The US VP Candidate Who Can Spell IT - Sarah Palin

If you are living in North America and have any interest in IT, you have come to realize that not a single politician from either side has really wanted anything from us for some time other than money. The Democrats have used Web technology more aggressively but, since Al Gore, have hardly been big supporters. McCain is still trying to figure out what e-mail is. The surprise addition of Sarah Palin, according to Input, may change this dramatically; she may actually be more IT focused than even Al Gore was. Gore, while clearly connected to the Internet and technology, really wasn't known as an IT supporter.

But, according to Input, Sarah Palin, the Republican VP candidate, has a history of spending money on real IT services in both her roles as mayor of Juneau and governor of Alaska. Input is a firm that specializes in studies surrounding government bidding practices and activity. It isn't partial to any politician nor to any one party, that I can tell.

Why Input Is Excited

Analysts in any vertical industry, and U.S. government has in the past been a lucrative industry, get excited when that industry appears to be about to get an influx of cash and bid activity. Palin, according to Input, spent nearly $70 million on technology and telecommunications, with about 41 percent going to IT services and consulting. They already have nearly $50 million in 2009 IT projects, suggesting that she was increasing her spending and, because she is known for being very fiscally responsible, the inference is this is because she saw results from last year's expenditures.

As far as transparency into the spending, according to Input, the state of Alaska's Checkbook Online shows where this money went. An impressively complete breakdown can be found on the Input site, along with coverage of her January state of the state speech on the importance of IT spending.

In these hard times, any executive who gets that IT, if properly funded and staffed, can save more money by far than it costs is going to be a hero to a firm like Input that is specializing in tracking IT expenditures.

Impact: If Elected

From an IT perspective, particularly if you work for government, if Palin is able to demonstrate real returns from this spending, her examples should permeate the government segment even if she isn't elected. But they will spread more quickly if she is elected, of course, and still has the authority to drive related initiatives. Given her apparent interest in this space and McCain's lack of interest, you would think he would let her take the lead here.

IT clearly goes through cycles from being the place where executives invest money to increase competitiveness to being a place where executives cut spending because they didn't see the advantages they were promised. Currently, it would appear that the market is more on the latter than the former course.

A top politician that could demonstrate - with demonstrate being the key word - the benefits of effective IT spending could help put the market and other IT executives back on a more interesting and well-funded path, and help make them more relevant again.

Wrapping Up

Historically with the Democrats, we've had politicians who could aggressively use technology to get elected and Republicans who could probably spell technology correctly 90 percent of the time. With Palin, we have the nearly unprecedented possibility of having someone in a top office who actually gets why technology is important and is articulate, not on the technology itself, but on how to make the best use of it.

That could be amazingly powerful for this industry. It could be the first time since I've been doing this that we've had someone who viewed the technology market as a strategic U.S. advantage, and not just a tactical source for election funds. It should make things even more interesting to watch and is potentially good news for those who sell into government. No wonder Input is happy.

By the way, I'm not suggesting you vote one way or another. Here in California, we gave up on making much of an impact on presidential elections decades ago. I'm suggesting that we in technology may like to encourage both sides to use Palin as a good example of how to effectively use technology to reduce the national debt and increase our competitiveness.

Palin Daughters Win in a Word War As the Media's Land of Low Expectations For McCain Disappears

The governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, has three daughters brought into public glare by their mom's VP candidacy in the 2008 presidential campaign. About one of those daughters, cruel judgments have been made about her non-secret pregnancy at age 17 and her engagement. The judgments have been made by some well-known people in political journalism, commentary, and entertainment.

For their part, and without firing a shot across the bow of the media fleet, all of the governor's three daughters have come out winners in this situation. Their confident public behavior under onslaughts of a ruthless, aggressive war of words designed to defeat their mom has drawn praise and admiration.

This does not change the fact, however, that to target a child is "unacceptable behavior," a popular term among those that have hit the Palin daughter and her mother most harshly. Other words for that behavior by the media are "wrong," "shameful," and "shoddy," for starters.

The media would have behaved wisely if all of their corps had allowed the Palin girls the same uncritical measure of privacy they gave to politicians' daughters like Amy Carter, the Gore daughters, and Chelsea Clinton.

Since they did not, the public watched to see how the Palin family would handle this most recent news and a breakdown of media standards. As some in the media acted and others among them kept silent about the media standards, the Palin daughters were demonstrating their mettle.

The first evidence of the children's strength was their composure and behavior in the public eye during the recent Republican convention. This made them winners whose public personages rose in comparison to a decline of respect for many well-known names in print, broadcast, and Internet media.

Let us remember that at the root of this recent uproar and media breakdown toward a 17-year-old minor daughter is the fact that their mother, Governor Sarah Palin, shot out of an unnoticed cannon into the most glaring spotlight when her name landed in the election battlefield as a VP choice.

When that news hit, it was also clear to many in the media that a fireball of a nominee had exploded many media personages camped in the Land of Low Expectations for John McCain's chances. When they picked themselves up from that shock, the same media personages, including journalists and political consultants, realized that Senator McCain's surprise move had demolished their studious predictions of a bland VP selection and an unlikely win for McCain as the next president of the United States.

Like Mt. Vesuvius blown up, media commentary grew into a volcanic reaction, spewing rivers of hot-lava words day and night. Commentary, politicizing, underhanded behavior, guesswork, and daydreaming fueled the positive and negative flow of unrelenting word-lava.

Already winners in the midst of all that drama, fed by media reactions, the Palin daughters demonstrated what it means to ignore the flack and to go one further, to "turn the other cheek" when under personal attack. They have done it thus far with indisputable grace and poise that most parents desire their children to show.

Governor Palin has hit the campaign trail running and prepares for her first national debate. Some voters may wonder, "What will become of the Palin girls?" The prediction is that their demonstrated strengths will count for a lot, whatever the future holds for them. The entire family's personal poise in public, under unique pressures, show them right now to be winners!

Why Governor Sarah Palin Should Stop Running 9 Miles a Day and What She Should Do Instead

Governor Palin from Alaska has made a lot of news lately... and during my daily readings... I noticed this story about her daily runs of 9 miles.

WSJ Running Alaska with Governor Sarah Palin

Although she was pregnant and had to cut back... Governor Palin is trying to get back into running again... she is up to 3 miles a day now.

But my point is this... Why? As far as I can see... there is NO good benefits to long distance running or jogging!

Folks have DIED while or after jogging. James Fixx the Godfather of jogging in 1984 at the age of 52 during his daily run, Dennis Johnson,the former NBA great died last year at the age of 52 after jogging, and how about Skip Prosser? He was the coach of the Wake Forrest college basketball team... and he died after jogging last year at the age of 56.

And this one is personal... I used to work with this guy... he was in fantastic SHAPE man... he died while jogging a few years ago!

And not only folks die while jogging... jogging is awful for your knees, feet and hips...

Recently, I was talking to my friend who cuts my hair... as usual she talked about her husband's jogging efforts. This guy is in his early 50s and in relatively great shape. However, he runs 5 miles plus each day. So she is saying the latest... it's his knees... or bone spurs in his feet... or he got hit by a car! (It really happened I swear to God...)

By the way, have you compared the physiques of the marathoners and the sprinters in the Olympics over the summer?

BIG difference huh? The sprinters were muscular and ripped while the long distance runners were spindly and anemic looking...

What can we take away from this? Long and boring endurance running or even aerobics are NOT the answer to fat loss! Steady state cardio just trains the lungs to breathe over long distances... it doesn't nothing for the heart or for your muscles.

That is right! You heard it here first...

Instead... try to turn all of your cardio workouts into interval workouts...

That means you should speed up and the speed down your workouts. It gives your heart a workout (which cardio or jogging doesn't). It stimulates your body's hormonal system to boost your metabolism to burn more fat.

And besides... the best benefit of them all? You can do interval workouts in half the time... time that you can spend on your hobbies... your family...

So Governor Sarah Palin... my advice is to stop jogging and do sprints instead... you will live longer and your body will thank you for it.

You will never be confused about effective fat loss again. Get rid of that orange peel thighs. Wave goodbye to those cottage cheese arms...

Once and for all, fit back into your old "thin" clothes... AND spend more time with the family because you are not wasting it on useless, long and boring cardio exercises...

What Makes Obama Presidential?

To those of you who are mesmerized by the stentorian tones of Barack (can't say his middle name because it's "insensitive") Obama I have a question. What has he EVER done that qualifies him to be president of the United States? Admittedly, he looks good, and sounds good. But then so does Katie Couric. President perky Katie?

Obama has never met a teleprompter he doesn't like. Nor an open debate that he does. He can give a speech, he reads really well. He showed this in 2004 which started this whole sorry mess. He also gave a platitude laden speech in 2008 but again was short on details. He says he wants to debate John McCain yet has declined over 10 times to do so.

Obama claims that Governor Palin has a small resume. Obamas resume is so thin you could shave with it. What has he done outside of being a "community organizer?" After all the puffery does he have his name on one major piece of legislation?

Sarah Palin has governed the largest state in the union and done it with an 80+% approval rating. She made more executive decisions as the mayor of a small town in a week than Obama has his entire career.

As president you have to actually make decisions and stand by them, not wait for legislative consensus. Obama is famous for voting "present." This means that he won't take a yes or no stand on the issue or question at hand. In other words, hundreds of times he didn't have the nerve to take a stand. When the phone rings at 3:00 A.M. and a decision has to be made he can't say "present." Both Senator McCain and Governor Palin have been in the crucible of pressure decisions. Neither Senator Biden nor Senator Obama ever have.

John McCain is truly a maverik. I don't agree with him on some of his stands. Nor do I agree with Sarah Palin on all of her stands. However they are both a breath of fresh air to the body politic. In fact I see a lot of Margaret Thatcher in Sarah Palin. If you want the same old hackneyd liberal tax and spend policies go ahead and vote Obama. Be careful what you wish for.

McCain's Big Blunder

John McCain has picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. This unqualified person could be a breath away from the presidency. To get Clinton votes, McCain has betrayed us. It shows that his brain is not functioning properly (just as mine doesn't).

I'm 76, and because of that, I feel that nobody over 70 should be elected to the presidency. Our older brains just don't function as they use to as McCain has shown.

I don't have anything against the Alaska Governor. She didn't choose herself. She's an "Idaho Girl" too, so that would be fine with me. But I think she should not have been asked to serve as McCain's running mate and she definitely should not have accepted.

Because she did not refuse already shows she does not have good judgment.

Some newscasters say that McCain was not listening to anybody. So he gave up his argument that Obama is not qualified, especially now that Obama has Joe Biden in his left pocket.

I met Joe Biden at a Senate hearing. He is very bright, has very good judgment and knows his way around Washington-and he is very experienced. I know that if something happened to Obama, we would have a qualified person to replace him. Not so with McCain.

I guess McCain thinks he is going to live forever. He likes to pose with his mother who is in her nineties. But McCain's father died at age seventy and when you are our age anything can happen.

I feel that no person over seventy should be elected to the presidency and that we need to amend the constitution to prevent it. If a man is serving, then he should be able to serve out his second term if reelected. In other words, a man could be elected at age over seventy during the second half of his presidency, then he would serve out his (or her) term.

Only Reagan served in the presidency in his seventies but no president has been elected at that age. Look at his sad history after serving our country in the best way he could. Things can quickly fall apart for we old folks. Of course, I see it every day as I watch my friends and family die away.

I watch how presidents age under the pressure of the office. A person starting in his or her seventies would have problems with the stress of office. McCain has a temper and I would not want to be around him when he is overworked as he will be if he is elected.

I lived in Arizona for six years before we moved to Idaho. I know that John McCain is a fine man. But now I have to question his ability to make a proper decision like when he didn't simply answer the "how many houses" question.

I can imagine having a president who makes bad decisions. We have had eight years of that. But I thought better of McCain. I'm sorry that he made this gargantuan blunder but it is better that we know before the election than after.

McCain will take Idaho. Democratic votes don't count here in national elections. Because we are a republic and not a democracy (despite what President Bush says) the electoral college will decide.

I would like to see the electoral college abandoned, but the politicians run this country, not the people, so we may never see that. I would like every vote to count.

I'm sorry that I can not vote for McCain. I like the man. I'm sure that many women will vote for him now that he had a woman running mate. That with racism could defeat Obama. I guess that McCain figures the American People will forgive him for his stupidity. After all, he is an old man and we old men get a lot of sympathy.

This 60-second image enhancement & retouch shows how just a few changes can make a big difference an image. Though Sagelight has the Skin Smoothing retouch feature, this was not needed here. I added a soft-focus and the enhanced the contrast with the Dodge and Burn Brush. The was smoothed by the soft glow, and then sharpness was added back in via the contrast I added with the soft glow. I went especially contrasty in this picture, as her black jacket and hair, combined with the pink stripe of her hair complemented by her lips of the same color; all this made me want to create a very stark image to highlight her beautiful face -- and that look! What I found to be most useful about the collection of essays are the many uses of source material from Palin family members, their friends , and associates, past, present, and cast aside, from the most famous of Alaskan beauty queens. Her lack of knowledge, taste for vendetta, and plastic, Christianity-on-the-surface-only shows through in story after story. Advanced Body Language - How Does Sarah Palin Really Feel About Down Syndrome?

If you watched the 2008 Republican National Convention, you most likely watched Sarah Palin deliver her speech in an attempt to find out more about this relatively unknown VP nominee. As expected, Palin revealed some interesting facts about her personal life, making many people feel they had known her for years. But for those who knew what to look for, there were some fascinating nonverbal messages communicated by Palin when she was talking about her young son with Down Syndrome.

While addressing potential voters who were also dealing with the challenges of raising and caring for special needs children, Palin said "...if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House." This message was very clear and concise, and very intentional. A message that probably went unnoticed by most viewers, at the conscious level, however, were the emotions of anger and disgust that quickly flashed across the face of Palin.

Paul Ekman coined the term "micro expression" to describe the almost imperceptible facial expressions that rapidly flit across the face of a person, leaking a plethora of information about what emotion they are feeling. These micro expressions are all but impossible to conceal, and offer those who know how to spot them an almost unfair advantage when interacting with others.

As Palin was delivering the phrase mentioned above, she clearly leaked the emotions of anger and disgust. For every emotion we experience, there are certain facial muscles that contract, reflecting to the world what is going on internally. With disgust, the upper lip is raised as high as possible. The lower lip is pushed out, while simultaneously being raised. The nostrils are flared, and creases or wrinkles are visible on either side of the nose. Anger pulls the eyebrows downward and brings the inner corners together. As this is occurring, there is an attempt to open the eyes nice and wide, resulting in the upper lids being pressed against the eyebrows. When the video of this becomes available online, be sure to watch; you'll be shocked at how powerfully these expressions are displayed.

Now, don't rush to a conclusion about what Palin is angry or disgusted about. While one can become very skilled at determining what emotions someone is experiencing by watching their face, it's simply not possible to say with any degree of validity why they are feeling them, or what they are in reference to. Of course, some guesses will be more accurate than others, but without more information, guesses they will be.

It's possible that Sarah Palin is angry and disgusted by how some people treat and taunt those with special needs. It could be that she is angry and disgusted about the way certain people are judging her about running for office while having a special needs child. Then, it is possible, that Palin feels angry and disgusted about the fact that, at this point in her life, she is faced with the challenge of caring for a child with Down Syndrome. I don't know. I can't know. Only Sarah Palin can know for sure.

Let this be a reminder when communicating with other people. While it may certainly seem like you know exactly what the emotion they displayed is in reference to, do not assume. I've always found it useful to say something like "Jim, I may be wrong, but I sense you are feeling angry about something, if that's the case, would you be comfortable sharing it with me?" Questions allow us to take the information we gathered from their nonverbal signals or body language, and determine whether it's relevant to the issue at hand.

Just know that other people are always giving your more information than you've been noticing, and that once you have that information, you have to factor it in appropriately. The tendency to jump to conclusions can wreck most any relationship, whether it is personal or business.

So, what can we safely say about Palin? She displayed the emotions of disgust and anger when talking about being an advocate for those with special needs children. To say, with certainty, much more than that, would require talking to Palin.

Why the Disdain For Sarah Palin?

What is it about Sarah Palin that infuriates liberals? Why does the liberal press and politicians go after her with such fervor?

I find it intriguing that they hang on every word she speaks and every move she makes. If the Washington elite really thinks she is washed up, why do they keep hound dogging her?

Quite to the contrary, subconsciously they don't think she is washed up. Even though they won't admit it, most fear she can be a real threat to the Obama regime. They are right, all the polls show her tied with Huckabee and Romney for the very early lead in the 2012 Republican primary. As a "tell it like it is" conservative, she has an 80% favorability rating among conservatives and a 40% favorable plurality among independents.

In this day and age, I find it interesting that to find favor with the media and the elite, one has to disagree with everything that makes any kind of sense. I find that people who are scorned the most are the ones on the right track.

Because of her sincerity and "no holds barred" style,Sarah Palin has a lot of political clout, drawing far larger crowds than any politician except perhaps the president. She was the only one who could intercede the Michael Jackson story on the cable news channels.

Palin continues to gain public confidence , even while most politicians around the world are falling from grace, these are the same politicians who are belittling her for being incompetent and unqualified. They assume it was a gross political blunder to resign from the governorship of Alaska.

Have they ever looked at a map, Alaska is several thousands miles from the continental United States, being close to an 8 hour flight from Washington D.C. it is almost impossible to campaign and stay abreast of things, being that far away.

She is correct in saying that there were too many distractions that kept her from performing her duties as Governor. How well did Obama fulfill his duties as senator of Illinois while campaigning, he wasted a lot of taxpayer dollars. Personally, I think every politician that runs for another office should resign the office they currently hold. Not only is it fair to their constituents, it also shows a commitment to the new position they are trying to assume.

Not only that, Palin is someone who knows how to talk to people rather than talking at or down to them.

People also respond favorably to a candidate who does not respond favorably to the Washington political class -- nor it to her.

Palin made a wise decision and has a bright future, conservatives need to re-embrace conservative values .Most people realize that McCain would have lost by a landslide,had it not been for Sarah Palin.

This country was founded on individual freedom, liberty, and free enterprise, not socialism and Marxism. We need more leaders who will support these and other conservative ideals, rather than govern by the latest polls, or what Hollywood dictates.

Latest Poll - Republicans Lack Leader - I Blame McCain

Exactly who speaks for the Republican Party these days? According to the latest Gallup poll, 18% of democrats think Rush Limbaugh is the main speaker for the Republican Party while republicans themselves can't come to more than a 10% consensus over any republican leader above the rest. Only a year ago the answer would have been a statistically resounding 'John McCain', but the subsequent political maneuverings of the McCain campaign not only compromised McCain as the present and future leader of the Republican Party they also left the party without a clear direction, reflected even now by this latest poll. Even at that time of the republican primaries there was a great deal of political division amongst the republican presidential candidates and the political priorities of their voter constituencies, most notably between the Christian base of Mike Huckabee, the Mormon and fiscal bases of Mitt Romney and the military and liberal-republican bases of John McCain.

Shortly after McCain prevailed in the primaries, it became clear in the polling that McCain was not appealing broadly enough to those voters who might have cast votes for either Romney or Huckabee in his place. The McCain campaign, aware of the Republican Party's already somewhat maximized base, was prompted to do something extreme - adding Sarah Palin to the ticket. In choosing Palin, the campaign picked a VP candidate very different from its presidential nominee. They augmented the 'John McCain as the one voice atop the Republican Party' strategy into the 'John McCain and Sarah Palin as the two separate voices atop the Republican Party' strategy. At the time, the republican campaign saw that McCain, as the lone outstanding political voice of the party, would not carry the 2008 electoral vote, but perhaps with a pseudo-second leader that appealed to an entirely different set of voting blocks they could achieve a much broader appeal and win the electorate.

If at this point your asking yourself how the described Palin selection for VP is any different from all other VP selections, allow me to clarify. Joe Biden, for instance, was selected to provide international experience and to carry the state of Pennsylvania, among other considerations. While Obama and Biden have their political differences, these are minuscule compared to their common ground and as such it is safe to reason that the vast majority of both the Obama supporters and the Biden supporters viewed the other candidate as an adequate leader for the Democratic Party. However, ask yourself, can the same claim be made about the McCain/Palin ticket? Seeing as the two campaigned on and/or symbolized conflicting messages, I would say no.

In contrast to the prototypical VP pick, which serves to complement and reinforce the presidential nominee's positions, much of Sarah Palin's appeal actually clashed with McCain's appeal and vice versa. McCain campaigned primarily on his experience, both in military and political matters, as well as his ability to bring about real change in republican leadership. Palin, by contrast, offered zero experience and looked like a direct life-line from the Bush Administration with her colloquial dialect and lack of precise public speaking. Similarly, from the perspective of the Palin supporters, Palin appealed primarily as a strong female leader and a religious conservative, qualities both somewhat at odds with John McCain considering his divorce from his then recently mangled first wife and his hazy abortion record.

I am not suggesting the McCain campaign leadership was not aware of these clashes, but rather quite the opposite in that they hoped the Palin supporters and the McCain supporters would see the republican presidential ticket as reflecting the ideals of their leader, and overlook the contradictions. Not only did this effort fail in the short term, but it has left the Republican Party with a confused message and lack of direction. It should come as no surprise then that the constituency of a party that lacks a united policy agenda cannot agree on a single representative leader. The Republican Party has a lot of work to do.

By now, the whole world has heard the line about the only thing separating a hockey mom from a pit bull being lipstick. Sarah Palin, the woman everyone knows about after being thrown into the national spotlight seemingly overnight, personifies feminine spunk that you just gotta love. Regardless of your politics, regardless of your stance on the working-versus-stay-at-home debate, regardless of your judgment on the teenage pregnancy thing. You just gotta hand it to her.

And if you've been reading my ROCKET MOM! Newsletters for the past four years, you know that I've always advocated wearing two things...if nothing else. Lipstick and mascara. So here we have it: hockey moms. Rocket Moms. ALL decent moms. Fighting to be the best they can be. And wanting to hear more of this woman we hardly know.

And now with Labor Day behind us, and my promise to once again renew the weekly dollop of "joie" via these email Newsletters, just how do we discuss what's been on my mind these past ten days in light of the fact that some of my readers are faithful because they like a weekly mommy-motivator, while some of you are with me because you are part of the design-chef-francophile crowd following the release of Country French Kitchens? An interesting mix, to be sure. But let's face it: we're all in need of nurturing both hearth and home, be it via parenting tips or marriage notes or simply advice on how to get dinner to the table. So if this is not your cup of tea, please forgive me. Delete this newsletter and wait until next week. Because I feel the need to talk about this with you.

This time of year finds me re-thinking my A-game. How to effectively go into fall with personal and family game plan in hand. Charting football schedules against volleyball games, out-of-state visits to our two college kids against client dinners. PTA involvement with board meetings. Figuring out an exercise and grooming schedule.

Now here's where Palin fits in. She's not just a hockey mom. She's a rocket mom of the nth degree. And she gives us plenty of tips on just how to get our A-game on the docket now that Labor Day and beach excursions are behind us.

What I'm learning from Sarah:

She's kept her priorities straight. Husband and kids first. Everything else falls into place once these priorities are set. As much as she loves her role as governor, she loves being a wife and mom most of all. (Love that.)

She's got the multi-tasking thing down pat. Sarah usually has her Blackberry in one hand and something of her child's in the other. Be it a ponytail she's shifting into a ribbon or homework needing a quick check, she does it with her mind ready to jump to the next task at hand. One might find contradiction to the idea of "being in the moment" or of being into the thing you're into. But Sarah seems to have figured out how to immerse herself into what she needs to and get her mind...and hands...prepared for what will inevitably come next, be it an executive meeting, a kid's play-date, dinner preparations or a conference call.

She's figured out that the best stress-reliever is physical exercise. Sweating at the gym or during a midnight jog is how Sarah best gets rid of the stresses that go with the job. Rocket moms have known this for years. We're into strength training and aerobic activity to tone lumpy thighs and keep arms and abs strong. Sarah kept her fifth pregnancy a secret not because she necessarily wanted to, but because her abs were so tight (after four babies!) that she was able to.

She's perky despite obstacles. Thrown into controversy both from her years as governor as well as parent to teenagers, she knows all too well that some things are beyond one's control and spin outside of one's reach or influence. In spite of it all, she stays cool under pressure and maintains a charming, can-do attitude even when the odds are stacked against her.

She's committed to service. Those who challenge her ability to be wife, mom and veep need to remember that she didn't choose to run for the vice presidency. She was chosen. Opportunities come to those who are prepared. Be it in your professional or personal life, your role at your church or house of worship, or the corner of the world in which you roam, opportunities to increase your reach will come your way if you do your homework and work your tail off. Embrace them. Your territory for influence will expand exponentially. Guaranteed.

She's intellectually and morally strong. I love strong people. Strong personalities. Can't help it. Always been attracted to strength. Sarah sticks to her convictions unapologetically. If she believes in a cause or a point of view, stemming from conviction based on faith or experience or pure world view, she does not let others deter her from meeting her goal.

She's embraced her femininity. Wears attractive clothing, an attractive hairstyle and obviously utilizes a fabulous skincare regimen because her complexion is flawless. Excellent personal grooming is a hallmark of all rocket moms, and while you might not prefer pink nail polish on your toenails (as do both Sarah and I...check out OPI's "Calypso" for one last hot pink late-summer fling ), you certainly keep them in good shape. And, I know you are already wearing lipstick and mascara....

There's more to learn over the next couple of months about this fascinating woman, Sarah Palin. I will be on the lookout for details, as I am always interested in reading about those women who might be role models for me. If you get any tidbits that you'd like to share, feel free to email me.

My minister shared a true story about an itinerant preacher, Jesse Lee, who is the namesake for the church where my family and I worship in our own small town. Unqualified, without credentials or pedigree, he simply rode-horseback-from village to village talking with others about the Gospel. He held up an apple to one of these crowds in one of these towns and noted that we can all count the number of seeds inside an apple...but only God knows how many apples will grow from the seeds.

There are some good lessons to take from the rise and fall of Sarah Palin. Whether Republican, Democrat or Independent most agree a mistake was made in choosing the Alaska governor. I won't re-hash the same points made in the media but I did want to draw some comparisons with the job search many are going through or will go through in the coming years.

Sarah Palin was what most folks call a passive job seeker. This means you have a job but remain open to new opportunities that may come your way. A lot of people fall into this category. Others who fall in this category are professional coaches, college presidents, etc.

From what I've heard she is a strong politician and probably was becoming pretty well networked within the Republican party. Networking, of course, is critical to getting your name out there and convincing people to think of you when opportunities present themselves in the market. It also gives you a more powerful endorsement when someone else shares your positives with a hiring manager or fellow recruiter. As a working candidate for a job, you are a lot more interesting to companies because you are a valued (paid) commodity. This allows you to network with confidence since there is less on the line, right?

Her resume was light on experience. She was limited to a small town Mayoral experience (not easy, I'm sure) and less than two years as a Governor. Most lacking was a knowledge of national issues as well as exposure to international ones. If you were reviewing resumes for the VP slot position for John McCain, would her resume make it past round 1? I've gotta say no. Clearly Sarah Palin had significant appeal, personality and strong views that made her interesting to key people in the McCain campaign. Forget about politics for a minute. Would IBM consider a young territory sales manager for an international director role? Of course not.

I have no idea how the interview process went for Sarah Palin. In addition to a traditional interview with key executives of the campaign, would it have been nice to throw her out on the Sunday talk shows to get a sense of her comfort level? Boy, that would have been helpful - both to her and to the campaign. Now, up above I mentioned her lack of experience and if you are on the right you may want to point to Obama's experience. The difference is in the interview. Most have said that Obama's calm, cool, professorial, knowledgeable interviews allowed him to appear more experienced than he actually was. Unfortunately, Sarah Palin's interviews exposed a tough truth - that she still had a lot of work to do in getting up to speed on the new issues to which she was asked to respond. Can you imagine being that IBM sales manager interviewing with the international VP and being asked a hypothetical question as to how you would sell to a tough customer in Germany when you've never set foot there? Really it comes down to one thing - preparation. Take the time or make the time to look, sound and be prepared for interviews. Learn the demands and issues of the job you are interviewing for and be ready to respond with confidence.

My thought for you? While it is tempting and aspirational to interview for jobs above your pay grade, be careful. While the money, prestige and benefits sound great, ask yourself - can I do this job? If the honest answer is no, don't do it. In my opinion, a smart Sarah Palin would have:

1. enjoyed the strong interest from the Republican party
2. quietly let it out that she was seriously considered for the VP slot
3. respectfully turn down the opportunity
4. go back to Alaska with head held high
5. offer to campaign like crazy for McCain/Lieberman or McCain/Ridge
6. set a personal objective for bigger things in 2012
7. identify the experience and knowledge required for a serious run at the job
8. execute the plan

Will Sarah Palin Get a Second Chance at the Presidency?

First thing you notice about Sarah Palin when she is asked a question regarding the world outside of Alaska, is the confusion on her face. The woman would be out of her depth in a bathtub. But she is a politician, and ignorance of the subject is no barrier to participation. After all, there is no law requiring one to be intelligent in order to run for office.

The electorate is looking for the girl or guy from next door to run things, as long as they talk the talk. No need to walk the walk. The people want change, that is what the press keeps telling us, but there is no real change, just a new face in the top job. For real change to happen you would have to change the system from capitalism to socialism (which they are doing right now) or communism or some other ism. Or just stop messing with the existing system and let it run it's natural course.

Capitalism in it's rawest form is like nature, the strong survive and the weak die. People who make dumb decisions go bankrupt, this clears away the mess and makes room for new growth. But the government wont let this happen without a fight, they will destroy the dollar protecting the big bankers. The same bankers who thought that lending money to people who could not pay it back was a good idea. As the fat caveman said "you hunt, you gather and I'll run the economy".

Sarah Palin is rough at the edges and that adds to her attraction, I know a lot of people who are tired of the well dressed fast talking type of politician they turn out these days. But in four years time they will have molded her into their way of thinking. The first sign will be when the glasses are replaced by contact lenses.

Yes, she will get a second chance at the presidency, the lady wants to run again. We all know that she will be as good or bad as anybody else. If you advertised the job, it would say.

President wanted, no experience necessary.

High standards in high places is a noble statement, and most people expect high standards. Their tax dollars are paying for everything these professional politicians enjoy, but people become drunk with power. And begin to think "what is the point in having power if you don't abuse it to your advantage", after all I am the president. Come to think of it, "whats the point of having a standing army, lets make use of it and start a war".

Problem with wars is they cost lives and money, lots of lives and lot and lots of money. But you usually hear politicians complaining about the economic cost of war, not the human cost. Numbers, just numbers. These people do not have to fight the wars they start, to them it's just like a game. Like moving pieces across a chess board, no need to worry about their sons or daughters dying in battle.

Make no mistake about it, the power over life and death really does boost their ego. Power is such a strange thing, at this moment in time the country does have the most powerful army on the planet. If the politicians had any sense they would be scared of this powerful army.

But then again, they way they are managing the economy their may be no money for bullets.

Ah, Sarah is not that bad after all, and everybody deserves a second chance.

A self-proclaimed "hockey mom" with five children and Governor of Alaska for almost two years, it is no wonder her speech was a resounding success. In fact, one has to ask who is the most popular among the two - her or Senator McCain.

It also seems clear that Senator McCain chose her because he realized he could not win this race without pulling off an unexpected feat. Under these circumstances, Governor Palin is being used by the RNC and the "old boys club" that the Governor claims to have fought against.

Her speech at the convention did not detail issues on the economy or foreign policy, but echoed the sentiments of Senator McCain in a most unbecoming manner. We know Sarah Palin has no foreign policy experience, and it is unnerving to think she is a step away from the presidency.

It was also a bit disingenuous to parade her newborn son on the convention stage. This six-month old baby should have been in a peaceful slumber.

Now that both conventions are over, Governor Palin will hit the campaign trail and say what? That she is for drilling in Alaska, that she is against abortion, against sex-education, against all of the things most women have been waiting for but have been summarily dismissed by the very party who nominated her.

Senator McCain gave his nomination speech last night and it was more of the same. He did not talk about the economy, he did not talk about women's rights; he just talked about his time as a POW. In fact, Governor Palin received more accolades from her speech than he. Yet, both speeches lacked substance. They were more akin to "good cop" - "bad cop."

The Republican Convention was a rhetorical dissertation based on fear. While it is true that Governor Palin's nomination is historic, it is also true that the very women who were screaming about Hillary Clinton not being treated fairly during the campaign are not asking why Palin was chosen in such haste. It is more than obvious! In fact, it is downright insulting.

Senator McCain thinks that by choosing a women as his running mate, the undecided voters will proudly vote for this ticket because she is a woman and dismiss the fact that if they win, this country will no doubt engage in another war and our economy will take a nose-dive.

Political expediency has run amok in the Republican Party. When that red phone rings at three in the morning, who will really answer it? Senator McCain will most probably be sound asleep and Governor Palin will be nursing her baby.
